Crime or Culture?
If you were not able to get onto the recently launched UK Crime website, which was unsurprisingly overwhelmed by people wanting to see how safe their area is, then the brand new Google’s Art Project is well worth a look.
Google have used their outdoor ‘Streeview’ technology inside some of the great art galleries of the world including the Tate Britain, the Met, National Gallery, the Hermitage, MOMA and many others.
As well as being able to move around the gallery spaces, a number of works have been digitised using the gigapixel process. This stitches together multiple high-resolution images averaging 7 billion pixels per image allowing to see the most minor detail in the work of art.
So now from the safety of my home I can see the world’s finest art in situ, whilst being reassured that the nearest crimes to me were several examples of anti-social behaviour.
